I was saddened by the loss of lives, homes, animals and habitats. It was a stark reminder of the reality of living in the midst of the Australian forest. Even though the forest was completely burnt out around us, we remained safe with our homes and animals, with the only patch of green left. We had been blessed.
An overwhelming urge to find a way to express my feelings came over me, with the desire to share how the fire had impacted on our lives. I started making notes and that was how the story began.
The Australian landscape and wildlife have played a large part in my artwork over the years. I thought I could illustrate the story myself with my art, and what a joy it has been.
We were the eyes on the ground and were able to alert the RFS when fire was getting close to each of the properties. This played a big part in the saving of homes and some very special animals.
This is only part of the story. There is a lot more to be told. Let me introduce you to Ari, our beautiful horse. He and his friends will tell you their story.
I hope my book will help by thinking about the animals that survived and how they helped each other find shelter. It is available on my website
